Heading Home

I'm heading back to the UK tomorrow for what I imagine will be the last Christmas I spend at the house in which I grew up. It's a strange feeling and an emotional sensation, and I suspect it will be a difficult few weeks.  Read More

Feeling Real

Just returned from Las Vegas - and quite possibly the best fight of the year - to a cold and rainy Washington DC. But there, on the doorstep, and just about sheltered from the elements, was a padded envelope containing three advance copies of "The Great White Bear." After all this time, it's actually a real book. Feels great, if slightly surreal, to hold it in my hand. UK publication date is January 6; in the US, it's January 12. Read More

Housekeeping and Las Vegas

Made a couple of small changes around here. I've dropped my full CV from the site; it was hard to maintain and seemed somewhat unnecessary for this forum, frankly. And I also dropped the newsletter page; great idea when this first began, but I haven't updated it since 2005 and anyway, doesn't this blog now fill the function that the newsletter was intended to? Read More

Six Weeks Away

My latest book, The Great White Bear is now six weeks from publication by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in the US. Publication date is January 12, 2011. In the United Kingdom, where the book will be called Ice Bear, publication date will be January 6. Read More

Mother

My mother died on Friday. It was sudden and unexpected - inasmuch as such a thing can be sudden and unexpected in an 81 year old woman. And then, suddenly, she was gone. Read More

World Cup

After a month, it's over. Felicidades Espana on a deserved win; there was a lot of emotion at the end there and understandably so. Even watching from afar, and with my team having been knocked out two weeks ago, it was pretty stirring stuff.  Read More

Page Proofs

It seems to take forever for a book to come together, for the research to fall into place, for the writing to be completed, and then the editing, and then more editing ... but you know it's the real thing when the page proofs arrive, as did the proofs for "The Great White Bear" the other day. Read More

Progress Reports

For a guy who gets paid (at least partly) to blog, I sure am pretty bad at maintaining the blog on my own website. But it's all good: I have finished my book manuscript, and the book is now entering production. It will be called The Great White Bear in the United States, and Ice Bear in the United Kingdom. Read More

The Gore Interview

My Al Gore interview is up on the Discovery News website, in two blogs here and here.

Talking with Gore

I've been meaning to wind down after finishing my book, and I will - very soon. First though, one big assignment: interviewing Al Gore for Discovery Channel News. I'll be talking to him about climate change (of course), the Copenhagen negotiations, and his new book, "Our Choice." That interview will be tomorrow, December 8; I'm looking forward to it but also a little anxious. And then afterward, I'm TOTALLY putting my feet up for a little while.  Read More
