There's arguably no finer Christmas song that the enigmatic melancholy of "Fairytale of New York", by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl (made all the more melancholy, in my view, by MacColl's tragic passing.) This excellent Guardian piece from 2010 offers the story behind the song, and the revelation that Shane McGowan, appearances to the contrary, could be an extraordinarily diligent and detailed songwriter.
